Midwifery Model of Care
Our local communities are experiencing a resurgence of women who desire to birth their babies in a manner aligning with their personal decisions and preferences, which are met by a licensed birth professional.
Licensed Midwives are providing these services to low risk women, who plan to birth their babies in a home birth setting or a licensed birth center.
Midwifery care dates back to the earliest centuries when women cared for women.
Women understand the needs and physiologic make up of other women, which results in positive outcomes for laboring women and their babies.
The Midwifery Model of Care encompasses the fact that pregnancy and birth are normal life events.
The Midwife monitors all aspects of the women coming in to care in regards to physical, psychological, social and spiritual well being.
She provides every client with individualized care via education and counseling throughout her prenatal period.
She attends and supports the physiologic processes once labor is established and will remain with the client throughout the delivery and postpartum period.
She uses measures that do not interfere with the labor and birth processes, but is well capable to handle infrequent emergencies should they arise.
Should a pregnancy reveal the need for obstetrical care, a midwife’s training includes recognition and referral of such clients.
Studies have shown the incidence of birth injury, trauma, medication requests and cesarean section rates dramatically reduced through the use of the Licensed Midwife implementing the Midwifery Model of Care.
